Network activities in North Karnataka

The north Karnataka network was initiated out of a realization that it is important to sustain the work begun in Thally and Kanakpura taluk,  which had brought demonstrable benefits to small and marginal farmers. As part of its planned growth, GREEN foundation established a seed bank network in 2001, in  collaboration with a11 like minded NGOs in the 9 districts of Karnataka – Bijapur , Bagalkot, Gadag , Dharwad, Belgaum, Koppal, Haveri, and Raichur- comprising of 35 talukas.

Farmer’s group formation was another intervention strategy which resulted in the formation of 22 farmers groups including men and women. Two seeds banks namely Nidenegelu and Chinnekatte in the network area started in the beginning are working very well with lots of crop diversity.  The sustainable agricultural practices(SAP) are coordinated with these groups and they have been capacitated in the process of seed conservation , value addition on (chips prepared  from pumpkin, salted  chilli ), seed  treatment and germination, rain water harvesting, preparation of panchagavya , vermicompost preparation etc. Rare varieties are identified in the network area and conserved in the gene bank by the group members.  Production of pure seeds, research and experimentation, training for promotion of sustainable agriculture practices, policy sensitization programs and marketing of organic products are the core activities of networking through farmers group.
